Simple Three Point Content Checklist
If you ask me what is the most important part of your business web site, I will tell you that it is the content. Now you might be thinking that this is because more content = better search rankings. While that is true, there are three things to remember before posting any content.
Here is a simple checklist to remember for any content:
- Add
- Optimize
- Proof
Add
Adding the right content to your site will help add creditability to your company. For example, if you are a plumber it would make sense to have a library of plumbing articles. Simple how-to’s, maintenance items, etc. Of course, the additional content will help with search engine rankings as well.
Optimize
Last week a client called me and asked, “Allen, why don’t I rank in Google for my main key phrase?” We reviewed her list of phrases. Then, I reviewed only her home page. And what didn’t I find on the home page? The key phrase. In fact, not one of her twenty-five pages contained the term she wanted to rank in. She had the term in a few graphics but not once in text. How can you expect to rank without using the terms! I am not suggesting you re-write all of your content using keywords in ever sentence. What I am suggesting is that you pepper your keywords across your pages. It is similar to dropping a name to get backstage at a concert. Just like adding heavy cream to a sauce makes it richer, adding your keywords and phrases will make your web site search engine richer.
Proof
It is crucial that the content is correct before publishing. Both grammar and spelling needs to be verified before you make a page/site/blog live. I reviewed a site yesterday that had mistake after mistake. Everyone makes a mistake here and there but to have multiple spelling errors on a page is not acceptable since you can easily run a spell check before publishing. This is your company’s image we are talking about! You only have one chance to make the right impression on a client. Hire a proofreader if necessary.
